Western Union is one of the most well-known domestic and international money transfer platform. Cash App, formerly known as Square Cash, has emerged as one of the most popular peer-to-peer money transfer apps in the US and UK, competing with similar financial juggernauts like Venmo and PayPal.
There are so many ways to send and receive money domestically and internationally nowadays that it really boggles the mind. Some people have even utilized cryptocurrencies as a way of transferring wealth around the world. But can you transfer money directly from Western Union to Cash App? Read on to find out.
Is It Possible to Transfer Money Directly from Western Union to Cash App?
Unfortunately no, it is not possible to transfer money directly from Western Union to Cash App. It is possible, however, to transfer money from Western Union to your bank account, and then from your bank account to Cash App. This does of course involve a few more steps, but as long as you have a smartphone and a bank account, it is possible.
How Do I Transfer Money from the Western Union App to my bank account?
The first question to ask here is do you need to use Western Union? If you are sending money internationally, to someone else, or your bank account in another country, then sure, use Western Union. But if you are just sending money domestically, within the country in which you live, you should just use Cash App itself and not bother with Western Union.
Assuming you are sending money internationally, or someone else is sending money to you from another country, let’s discuss the steps involved to complete your money transfer.
Step 1: Download the Western Union App
Pretty straightforward here. Open the App Store or Play Store and download the Western Union (or WU) app. Make an account and all that good stuff.
Step 2: Open the App and Select Country
Because Cash App is only available in the US and the UK, we’ll assume you’re sending money to someone who lives in the United Kingdom. Once you open the app, you’ll select the country of the person you’re trying to send money to, which in this case will be the “United Kingdom”.
Step 3: Choose Payout Amount and Local Currency
Next, you’ll choose how much money you want to send, which will be in US dollars. Then you’ll select the local currency you want the other person to receive the money in, which in this case would be British Pound (GBP). It will then tell you how much the other person will receive in pounds based on how much you are going to send in US dollars. Be sure to select “Bank Account” as the payout method.
Step 4: Enter the Receiver’s Bank Information
Enter the bank information of the person to whom you are sending money. This will include the name of their bank, its SWIFT/BIC code, and the person’s IBAN, or International Bank Account Number. Once all these details are correct, you can move on.
Step 5: Choose How You Will Send the Money
Next, select how you will send the money, from your bank account, using a credit or debit card, or by paying cash physically at a Western Union location. The simplest method will be to use your bank account. Hopefully, your bank account details are still loaded from when you made a WU account.
Once you’ve done that, confirm the transaction and you’re good to go!
Adding Money to Cash App
Now, that you or the other person has some money they received through Western Union in their bank account, let’s talk about how you can add that money to your Cash App.
Step 1: Download the Cash App and Add your Bank Account

Step 2: Add Money to Cash App
To add money to your Cash App balance, first tap the Banking tab from the Cash App home screen. Press “Add Cash”. Enter the amount you would like to add (which can certainly be the amount you added to your bank account from Western Union). Tap “Add”. Then use Touch ID, Face ID or enter your PIN to confirm the transaction. You’re all set, and you’ve got some brand new money to spend using Cash App!
